Fish transport systems are essential for maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems and ensuring the sustainability of fish populations. As barriers like dams and culverts disrupt natural migration routes, innovative solutions are needed to facilitate the movement of fish. At Whooshh Innovations, we are committed to developing advanced technologies that support fish welfare while addressing the challenges posed by these barriers.

Fish transport systems play a crucial role in helping fish and other aquatic species access essential habitats they need to survive and thrive. For many species, specific areas such as spawning grounds, feeding zones, and safe environments for growth are critical for their life cycles. However, dams, weirs, and other human-made structures frequently obstruct these vital migratory pathways, making it difficult—if not impossible—for fish to reach these key habitats. This disruption can lead to drastic declines in fish populations, impacting biodiversity and altering the natural balance of the ecosystem.
When fish cannot reach their spawning grounds, they lose the ability to reproduce effectively, which can lead to dwindling population numbers over time. This loss not only threatens the species itself but also has a ripple effect on the entire food chain. Aquatic plants and other organisms that depend on nutrient cycling are also affected, as fish migrations contribute significantly to nutrient distribution across freshwater and marine systems. These population declines don’t just hurt the environment—they can also have serious economic repercussions for communities and industries that rely on fishing as a primary source of income.
Effective fish transport systems are essential for restoring these natural migratory patterns. By providing safe and efficient passage around barriers, these systems allow fish to navigate waterways without stress or injury.
At Whooshh Innovations, we have developed state-of-the-art fish transport systems that utilizes pneumatic tubes to move fish quickly and safely over barriers. Our technologies minimizes stress on fish during transport, allowing them to glide smoothly through flexible tubes. These systems have been designed with modularity in mind, making them adaptable to various site conditions and species requirements.
Our commitment to innovation is evident in our ability to integrate advanced technologies such as AI for real-time monitoring and sorting of fish. This ensures that we not only facilitate effective passage but also gather valuable data for fisheries management.
A significant application of our technology occurred in British Columbia at the Big Bar site, where a landslide created a natural dam blocking salmon migration routes. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, we collaborated with the Department of Fisheries & Oceans Canada (DFO) and the Yinka Dene Alliance to install our PassagePortal™ system.
Despite challenging conditions—no roads or power—the Whooshh system was installed within three months. The PassagePortal™ transported over 8, salmon safely bypassing the obstruction within a short time frame. This project not only helped preserved critical salmon runs but also showcased the effectiveness of our technology in real-world applications.
The development of effective fish transport systems is crucial for sustaining healthy aquatic ecosystems and supporting sustainable fisheries management. Whooshh Innovations is dedicated to providing innovative solutions that enhance fish welfare while facilitating efficient migration.
As we face ongoing challenges related to habitat loss and climate change, investing in advanced technologies like ours will be essential for ensuring healthy fish populations and vibrant aquatic environments for future generations.
